How Do I Get to Lahemaa National Park from Tallinn?
Viru bog is 52 km east of Tallinn, 45 minutes to an hour by car. A bus reaches one trailhead; a day tour links the bog, a manor and the coast.
By road, east out of Tallinn on the Tallinn–Narva highway, the E20. The nearest of Lahemaa’s big sights, the Viru bog trail, starts from a car park 52 km from the city, 45 minutes to an hour away by car. Palmse, where the park’s visitor centre stands beside a restored baroque manor, is 73 km along the same road and then 7 km off it. A bus will get you to one of those places. To see the bog, a manor and the coast on the same day without a car, take a tour.

The tour with the longest record is the full-day trip run by Prangli Reisid OÜ, rated 4.9 from 922 reviews and from about $134 on the booking platform when we checked. It stops at Jägala waterfall on the way out, walks Viru bog with a guide for an hour and a half, then visits a manor (Sagadi or Palmse) and a fishing village (Altja or Käsmu), depending on the season. Lunch and the manor ticket are not included.
Driving: the E20 and a turn-off
The State Forest Management Centre (RMK), which runs the park’s trails and its visitor centre, gives these directions:
- Viru bog: 52 km on the E20, then left at the sign for Võsu and Loksa. The car park is on the right, and the trail starts there.
- Palmse: 73 km on the E20, then turn towards Võsu and Palmse onto the Viitna–Koljaku road and drive 7 km. The visitor centre is next to the manor.
- Altja: carry on through Palmse and Sagadi, about 90 km from Tallinn in all.
Visit Estonia, the national tourism site, calls the park “only about an hour’s drive” from the city. The tour vans give a feel for it: 35 minutes to Jägala, 25 more to the Viru bog car park, and 75 minutes back to Tallinn from Käsmu at the end of the day.
Jägala waterfall is about 25 km east of Tallinn, a 30-minute drive, where the river drops about 8 m over a limestone ledge more than 50 m wide. It sits outside the national park, on the road to it. The park itself has no gate and no entry fee.
By bus, one place at a time
Buses do run out there. Visit Estonia says the stop for Viru bog is a little under a kilometre from the trailhead, and RMK puts the visitor centre opposite the Palmse bus stop. So a bus can get you to the bog, or to Palmse. Joining them up in one day is harder, because the sights are spread out: the bog is 52 km from Tallinn, Palmse about 80 km and Altja about 90. We haven’t checked timetables, so look them up on peatus.ee before you count on a connection.
Is there a train?
None of the official visitor pages, from RMK, the Environmental Board (Keskkonnaamet) or Visit Estonia, offers a rail route to the park. All their directions are by road.
What fits in one day
A classic day covers four stops: Jägala on the way out, the Viru bog boardwalk to its 11-metre tower, one manor and one fishing village. On the full-day tour’s itinerary that is half an hour each at Jägala, the manor and the village, an hour and a half on the bog, and a tavern stop for lunch.
What doesn’t fit is the rest of the park. The Environmental Board’s 2016 brochure counts 21 study and hiking trails, some 120 km in all, and the hiking trail round the Käsmu peninsula is 15 km on its own. The full-day tour visits Sagadi or Palmse, not both, and Altja or Käsmu, not both.
If you’re driving yourself, watch the calendar. From 16 September to 14 May the visitor centre opens on weekdays only, 9:00 to 16:00, and from October to April Palmse manor opens Wednesday to Sunday.
For a first visit without a car, the full-day tour is the simplest way to see that range in one day.

Where the tours start
Every Lahemaa day trip sold here starts in Tallinn and comes with a guide and transport, but the meeting points differ. Prangli Reisid’s full day offers two starting points, chosen when you book; our data doesn’t name them. Traveller Tours’ day trip meets just outside the city’s Tourist Information Centre. Food Sightseeing Estonia meets by the chimney-sweep statue at Suur-Karja 17 and includes pickup and drop-off if you need it.
