Is Lahemaa National Park Worth Visiting?

Yes, for a day of Estonian nature from Tallinn: a bog boardwalk, a manor and a fishing village. The park is free; manor tickets and most lunches are extra.

Updated October 2026

Yes, if you want a day of Estonian nature from Tallinn. Lahemaa became a national park on 1 June 1971, Estonia’s first and the first anywhere in the Soviet Union. About an hour’s drive from the city, it gives you a bog boardwalk, a restored manor and a fishing village on a boulder-strewn coast, all in one day. It is flat, quiet countryside rather than mountains, and its animals mostly stay out of sight. If neither of those puts you off, go.

Erratic boulders are everywhere on this coast; the field at Käsmu alone covers more than 400 ha.

The day trip with the longest record is Prangli Reisid OÜ’s full-day tour, rated 4.9 from 922 reviews and from about $134 on the booking platform when we checked. It stops at Jägala waterfall on the way, spends an hour and a half on Viru bog, then visits a manor and a fishing village, picked by season.

What the park gives you

Lahemaa means “land of bays”, the name the geographer J. G. Granö gave this stretch of the Gulf of Finland coast. The park covers 74,784 ha, a third of it sea, and Visit Estonia calls it “home to the best that Estonian nature has to offer”. It is one of three Estonian national parks with a quality label from the EUROPARC Federation.

In one day you can:

  • stop at Jägala on the way out, outside the park, where the river drops about 8 m over a ledge more than 50 m wide;
  • walk the Viru bog boardwalk to its 11-metre tower, on a trail that drew 77,200 visits in 2024;
  • see Palmse, which the Environmental Board calls one of Estonia’s finest baroque manor ensembles, or Sagadi, a manor museum and a forest museum on one ticket;
  • walk Altja, a fishing village first recorded in 1465, or Käsmu, the captains’ village, where more than 400 ha of forest hold Estonia’s densest field of erratic boulders.

What a day costs beyond the tour

Infographic of what a Lahemaa day costs beyond the tour: the national park and the Palmse visitor centre are free; an adult pays 8 euros at Palmse manor from October to April or 12 euros from May to September, and 5 euros at Sagadi manor, and lunch is extra unless your trip includes it
The park is free; the manors and lunch are where a Lahemaa day adds up. Prices checked in October 2026 and subject to change.

Is Lahemaa free? The park is: there’s no gate and no ticket, and the visitor centre at Palmse is free. You pay at the manors, €5 for an adult at Sagadi, and €8 (October to April) or €12 (May to September) at Palmse, at 2026 prices. Lunch is the other extra. The full-day tour and Traveller Tours’ day trip stop at a tavern where you buy your own; Food Sightseeing Estonia’s day trip is the only one that includes a meal, a light two-course lunch. Bog shoes on the half-day Jägala trip and rubber boots on the bog-shoe hike cost extra too.

On the full-day tour, then, the bill is the tour price, one manor ticket and a tavern lunch.

Where it falls short

It isn’t dramatic scenery. The park is forest, bog and coastline, and its sights are quiet ones. The big animals keep out of sight, and none of the day trips is a wildlife tour; are there bears in Lahemaa? covers what you will see instead. Summer brings mosquitoes, and from May to October ticks, so pack a repellent that works on both.

Viru bog is busy at peak times, so for a quiet walk go early, or out of season. Out of season has its own catch: from 16 September to 14 May the visitor centre opens on weekdays only. And no day trip covers everything. The full-day tour picks one manor and one village.

Who should do something else

If a bear is the goal, Estonia’s bear watching is done from hides in Alutaguse National Park, which this site doesn’t sell. Birders should read Tallinn birdwatching, which covers Paljassaare and Matsalu. The guided bog-shoe hike goes to Kõnnu Suursoo, outside the park, and the Viru bog guide explains why. With only half a day, Jägala and Viru bog takes about three and a half hours.

For wheelchair users, the first 1.3 km of the Viru bog boardwalk, up to the tower, suits wheelchairs, and the tower’s first platform can be reached without stairs. Food Sightseeing Estonia’s trip is not suitable for people with mobility impairments, and the half-day Jägala trip and DreamLife’s day are not suitable for wheelchair users, so ask the operator before booking any of the others.

For the trip out, read how to get to Lahemaa from Tallinn, and for the manors and their tickets, Lahemaa’s manors. Every tour is compared on the homepage.
